Huck’s Fearless Forecast
Where is Erk Russell when you need him? That guy has experience playing in a hurricane. September. I989. Hugo. Thursday night. National television. Erk wasn’t about to cancel a game on the banks of Beautiful Eagle Creek because of a Cat 5 hurricane. It looks like the SEC and the University of Alabama have the same mindset this weekend. So what if you put tens of thousands of lives at risk as they drive through the storm to get to the game. It’s a Top Ten matchup and Gameday is there and money is at stake. The game must go on. Nonetheless, it’s the weekend, so What the Huck! Let’s pick a few games.
Duke at the Joke by the Coke. Tech has looked horrible this year. They have lost to Colorado and Stanford—two of the worst teams in college football. Duke is 4-0—and ranked. It should be a Blue Devil beatdown. But Duke has wet the bed and disappointed me by losing to Tech over and over and over. Why should Saturday be any different?

Texas Agricultural and Mechanical School. The only thing hotter than Mike Elko’s seat is Ella Langley. And Ella is a whole lot prettier. The 12th Man hasn’t done enough to get the Aggies over the top, despite all the oil money in Texas. It’s going to be a long day again on Saturday for the only team in football with uniformed Yell Leaders.
Mizzou 21 A&M 18
Cocky in the Swamp. Wait. Forget what I said about Mike Elko’s seat. I forgot all about Shane Beamer. He’s too nice a guy for all of this, but it’s all part of it. This week, however, I’m looking major upset. Cock-a-doodle-do.
USC 31 Florida 28
Texas and Oklahoma at the Red River Shootout. Yeah. They tried to change the name, but I still call it the Cocktail Party, too. There is no rhyme nor reason behind this hunch, but I think the Sooner defense will be too tough for Texas and John Mateer has got to be better than he has shown. I’m picking another upset, but—keep in mind—I never back my prognostications up with wagers, so I have nothing to lose.
Oklahoma 27 Texas 17
Lane Trane at Kroger Field. This one should be a mismatch. Kentucky has shown great improvement this year under new coach Will Stein, but it’s almost basketball season so don’t expect additional miracles from Big Blue on the gridiron.
Tigers 34 Cats 17
Hairy Dawgs at Tuscaloosa. Sigh. I think Georgia is a better football team than Alabama. I KNOW Kirby Smart is a better coach than Kalen DeBour. I would much rather go to war with Gunner Stockton than Bama phenom Keelon Russell. But until we do it, I have no reason to think we can do it. I grew up reading Superman comics. I know what Kryptonite can do to the man of steel. Sadly.

Being wrong is nothing new for me and I will be praying that I am wrong Saturday night—from a cruise ship off the coast of Maine. No hurricanes or nor’easters in sight up here. If you happen to be on the Celebrity Silhouette, look for me. I’ll be the good looking guy in the red dinner jacket—the one with a worried look on his face.
