It was a Game for the Ages

It was easily my favorite game of the year. The night was electric. The oldest on campus college football stadium in America was electric with anticipation. Conference championship games, national rankings, long lost respect, and even a spot in the College Football Playoff was on the line. Biggest game, easily, in three decades. Just ask anybody. On second thought, no need to ask. Didn’t have to. They all told you—all week.

Then toe met leather, and the Game of the Decade was underway. The team with the best offense in college football and the shoo-in for the Heisman at quarterback, received the opening kickoff. That offensive juggernaut ran three plays, gained four yards, and punted.

But the defense, much aligned over the past few weeks, was swarming, and forced the visitors to punt it right back after gaining one meager first down. Surely the high octane offense would make headway on the second offensive series of the night.

Or not.

This time it was three plays for minus ten yards and then the punt. But the second time the visitors got the pigskin they covered 69 yards in three plays—in under a minute—and the route was on. Three minutes into the second quarter it was 28-0 in favor of the Northern interlopers.

Finally, the home team managed to score a couple of touchdowns and reach striking distance before half. And they managed to stop the visitors on their first possession of the second half, then drove the ball 75 yards on ten plays—just in time for their All-Everything six-year veteran conquering hero to throw the most beautiful 100-yard pick six in the annals of the field formally known as Grant at Bobby Dodd Stadium, on The Flats, near the projects that are across the expressway from the The Varsity.

It was 35—14 and the game was over, even after the Carpetbagging Panthers Yankee coach tried to give the home team a chance by mismanaging the clock horribly down the stretch and calling for the most advised fake kick since the 2018 SEC Championship game.

42-28 was the final and . . .

Oh. Wait. You came here to read about the Georgia game?

Oh, that was a typical Kirby contest when the Dawgs are favored by 40 or more. No, we aren’t about to cover. Why embarrass a team that is clearly outclassed? We save our beatdowns for Top Ten teams that roll into Sanford thinking they have a chance to win—like Texas last week.

Nate Frazier scored a couple of touchdowns. Bo Walker, the little man with the best name ever for a Southeastern Conference running back scored the first, second, and third touchdowns of his college career. Noah Thomas had a great day. Nine Bulldogs ran the ball, fifteen caught the ball, (yes—15!) Charlotte kicked a field goal and Gunner threw a rare interception. And it was a magnificent day on Dooley Field. But not as nice as the evening in Atlanta.

It's Hate Week, y’all. Glory, glory to old Georgia. Look for me Saturday in Atlanta. I’ll be the good-looking guy in the red shirt—the one with the big number 8 on the back—and To Hell With Tech on the front.
